Windows 10 update KB4517389, released on October 8, 2019, is causing problems with the Start menu, search, Edge browser and VMWare for many users.
Reported issues include –
- "Critical Error - Your Start menu isn’t working" or similar message pops up, forcing the user to sign out
- Searching in the taskbar displays an empty results panel
- Microsoft Edge does not start up from its icon
- VMWare 14 no longer works and enters an error loop
Uninstalling the update may resolve these, for some the problem with the Start menu persists.
An official fix is promised for the end of October, but until then, other possible solutions involve editing the Windows registry or configuration files within app packages, which can lead to system corruption if not done correctly.
