MS Issues Critical IE 8 Fix

Microsoft released 33 security updates for a range of products in this month’s ‘Patch Tuesday’. Most notable is a critical security fix for Internet Explorer 8 which was exploited in a recent attack on the US Department of Labor and other websites. These updates should be deployed in an organization by IT professionals or through Windows Update by home users.

Word, Excel, PowerPoint Go Mobile with Google Quickoffice

Following their acquisition of the company last June,Google has released Quickoffice apps that allow you to edit MS Office files on iOS or Android devices. Will this be enough to tide us over until the oft-touted, near mythical Office for iOS makes an appearance?
Another development previously only available on Chrome OS, the new Chrome Office Viewer for Windows and Mac lets you open doc, xls and ppt files on the web straight in Google’s browser.

Free Windows 8.1 Update Announced

The first major update to Microsoft Windows 8  (initially codenamed ‘Blue’, now officially labelled Windows 8.1) is to be released to current users for free at the end of the year. This could be the end of the ‘Service Pack’ and marks a shift in the way Windows OS updates are handled, possibly hinting at a subscription service in the future. The update is expected to contain fixes for common complaints levelled at Windows 8 since its release. There are even hints at the return of the ‘Start’ button in some shape or form. More will be revealed when public beta testing begins on June 26.

Google I/O Overload

Google’s I/O developer conference was held in San Francisco from May 15-17. Much like Apple’s WWDC, I/O is now used as a platform to unveil new products through presentations, and this time Google really pulled out all the stops. Suffice to say there’s an awful lot to process and a ton of interesting new features and services in the pipeline.Check out a summary of some of the most important announcements from Google I/O or view the full three-hour keynote on YouTube.
